Baklava – The Sweetest of Them All
Baklava is a very sweet cake, an oriental dessert which is very popular in Bosnia, Serbia, Monte Negro, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.
It is a sweet pie with up to 70 layers of thin dough crusts. It used to be made only in households, traditional cake shops or so called bombona trgovina (candy store). Today you can find it in almost every supermarket. If you want to try the real baklava we recommend that you avoid the supermarket and visit the nearest dessert shop in the city.
Baklava is made of thin layers of pie crusts and filling of minced or cut nuts (nuts, wallnuts, almonds, pistachio ). Grated lemon crust, cinnamon and vanilla sugar is added for flavour and it is topped with syrup made from sugar, honey, water and lemon juice.
Traditionally it is cut in a rhomb shape, so called Kus or Dilum. It is served cold on a plate, piece by piece. This is one of the most popular treats in Banja Luka city and we believe that you will love it too.
